Center | EarTech in the Media EarTech in the Media Ear Tech in Ogden has installed a CHARTR VNG/ENG system, which also includes a VOAIR caloric irrigator, currently, the only one in the state, a new, computer-based diagnostic instrument that can make important contributions to the diagnosis and treatment of dizziness and other balance disorders. Dizziness or some related balance disorder afflicts up to 40% of the population at some time in their lives. Most of the causes can be readily treated once a diagnosis is made. The new CHARTR VNG/ENG at Ear Technology makes the process easier, more accurate and less costly. This will be a welcome benefit to the hundreds of people in are area who suffer from the distressing symptoms of balance disorders. VNG (videonystagmography) or ENG (electronystagmography), is a method of recording and analyzing eye movements. Because eye movements are closely associated with our balance systems, VNG/ENG can offer important information about how well the balance system is working. If everything works as it should for example, we can keep our eyes on a target while we move or while the target moves, thereby maintaining our balance. Using VNG/ENG we can artificially create dizziness that should generate predictable eye movements. By stimulating the patient through body movements, target movements, a Audiologist specialist in Hearing and Balance disorders can focus attention on specific vestibular and neurologic areas of concern and on specific causes of a disorder. What the new CHARTR VNG/ENG system does that was not previously possible is to measure the speed of eye movements, how accurate they are, how precisely they mimic target movement and how the eyes respond to other sophisticated stimuli. This refined ability to control stimuli and analyze results opens an entire new dimension in diagnosis that can take place for patients with dizziness or imbalance disorders. For additional information or questions you can contact the Audiologists at Ear Tech, “Hear Your World” and ask for Terry or Kerry, who are the leading specialists in Hearing and Balance Disorders for the Northern Wasatch Front at 801-399-9955.
