What To Expect on Your First Visit

Since family members or loved ones are often the first to notice the changes in your hearing, we highly recommend that you bring any one of them with you on your first visit. They can help provide us with a thorough history and reason for the hearing consultation.

Expect to be asked a lot of questions. Your answers to these questions are valuable. They will help us fully understand your hearing needs and customize our hearing services for you.

You will be tested in a sound booth. You will be asked to listen to beeps and tones of different pitches and loudness. You will also be asked to listen and repeat words in quiet and in noise.

After the hearing test, our hearing expert will thoroughly discuss the results with you and make recommendations. We encourage you to ask questions or voice any concerns.

Hearing Test

Are hearing tests only for people with hearing loss? Contrary to popular belief that hearing tests are only for those with hearing loss, a hearing test is for everyone. Most people have their eyes and teeth checked regularly. Our sense of hearing should be treated the same because good hearing contributes to your overall well being.

What is a hearing test?
The hearing test is the most crucial part of the hearing evaluation process. It provides information about your overall hearing health. The hearing test can determine whether hearing loss is present or not. If hearing loss is present, the hearing test can determine the severity, type and possible cause.

How is a hearing test done?
A hearing test is conducted inside a sound treated room. You will be asked to listen to a series of beeps or tones of different pitches and loudness and respond by raising your hand or pressing a button. You will also be asked to repeat words and sentences in quiet and/or in noise.

The hearing test is a painless test and usually takes about an hour to complete.Sometimes people become anxious even scared when in an enclosed space for an extended period of time. If this is the case, do not hesitate to let our Audiologist know. At our clinic, we modify our hearing test protocol to accommodate your needs and make you feel comfortable.

After the hearing test, our Audiologist will thoroughly discuss the results with you. If hearing loss is identified, hearing aids will be recommended. Feel free to ask questions and voice your concerns at this point. Your questions and answers can provide insight as to what is important to you and help customize your treatment plan.

Can I have a hearing test if I have a lot of earwax?
Your ears will also be examined by the Audiologist prior to the hearing test. If excessive wax is present, it will be removed first. This is necessary because excessive wax can affect the accuracy of the hearing test results.

Hearing Aid Repair and Service

Do hearing aids have warranties?
New hearing aids come with a standard repair and loss and damage warranty. Depending on the level of technology of the hearing aids, the repair warranty can either be 1 to 3 years. The loss and damage warranty is a one-time policy meaning the manufacturer will replace a lost or damaged hearing aid only once.

What happens after the hearing aid warranty expires?
Hearing aids that are out of warranty can be repaired for a fee depending on the age of the hearing aids. If a hearing aid is no longer under warranty but needs to be repaired, our patient care coordinator will notify you to obtain authorization.

Hearing Protection

Why protect your ears Hearing loss due to prolonged exposure to noise can cause permanent and irreversible damage. However, it is also the most preventable. The use of hearing protections such as earplugs and earmuff can help prevent noise induced hearing loss and preserve your hearing.

When to use hearing protection
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires all employees to use hearing protection at work when the sound level reaches 85 dB and higher. This is a good guideline to observe even outside the workplace. At home, we are exposed to appliances and tools such as hair dryers, vacuum cleaners ,lawn mowers, power tools, weed eaters, hedge trimmers and blowers that are loud and can produce sound levels over 85 dB. Continuous and prolonged exposure to these equipment without ear protection can cause permanent damage to the sense of hearing. Hearing protection should be used when engaging in these activities. Your ears will thank you later on.

What hearing protection to use
There are different types of hearing protections. There are disposable foam-type, earmuffs and custom hearing protection. Hearing protection can also be classified as active and passive. Active hearing protections have electronic components that shut off to protect your ears when the sound level becomes too loud. Active hearing protections are available in custom or earmuff style.Passive hearing protections do not have electronic components and are often made of silicone or foam.

Each type of hearing protections have their own pros and cons. The foam-type are convenient, readily available and affordable. However, foam-type hearing protection can be difficult to use for someone with small ears. They also must be inserted correctly in the ear to be effective. The custom-type are more comfortable, adjustable but cost more. An impression of your ears is also needed to order the custom-type.

There are also several types of hearing protection for different activities.Talk to our Audiologist to find out which noise protection is right for you.

Assistive Learning Devices

What are Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) Assistive Listening Devices ( ALDs) are gadgets that allow you to hear speech better especially in difficult listening situations such as noisy restaurants, parties, theaters and lecture halls. ALDs can also enhance the clarity of speech when watching television, hearing on the telephone or cell phone..

Why do we use (ALDs)
Sometimes the hearing is not as good as it used to be but the decrease in hearing may not be severe enough to require hearing aids. Nevertheless, a boost in hearing is needed to understand speech better. Other times even with hearing aid, people continue to struggle understanding speech in very difficult listening situations such as noisy restaurants, large crowds .These are some of the situations where ALDs can be very helpful.

How do ALDs work
ALDs are often used in conjunction with the hearing aids. The hearing aids are paired to the ALD using bluetooth technology. Pairing is a simple process that allows the television, cell phone or remote microphone to communicate directly and wirelessly to the hearing aids via bluetooth. Once paired, voices on the television or cell phone sound clearer.

Not all Assistive Listening Devices are used with hearing aids. There are ALDs that can work as stand alone devices.
